Dealing a Better Hand: Exploring the Potential of Long-play Card Game Engagement on Pro-Environmental Behavior Adoption Among Emerging Adults
The anthropogenic environmental crisis is a global issue that requires collective action from individuals and governments, alike. On an individual level, behavior change has been deemed salient in addressing this crisis. A growing number of studies have highlighted the potential of game-based interventions as tools to promote behavior change. Using a research through design approach, this qualitative study aims to explore the potential of a long-play card game in promoting and stimulating pro-environmental behaviors in emerging adults in the Netherlands. A long-play card game called EcoQuest was designed as the research probe to conduct the study.

The study reveals that participants generally engage in Pro-Environmental Behaviors (PEBs), with recycling being the most common practice, likely influenced by the Netherlands' waste separation policy. Participants' environmental concern drives their PEB engagement, indicating a willingness to adopt sustainable practices. However, barriers such as affordability, time constraints, and habit formation hinder PEB adherence. A PEB card game could leverage existing PEB engagement and address barriers through gamified learning. Post-gameplay, participants showed increased awareness but struggled with behavior change, suggesting the need for longer play periods and clearer instructions. Social interaction and collaboration among players enhance game engagement, while a reward system may vary in effectiveness depending on individual motivations. Clearer guidelines and rules are essential for a smoother gameplay experience, emphasizing the importance of concise instructions to motivate PEBs effectively.
Findings from the study suggest that, while a long-play card game may not directly influence pro-environmental behavior change, it could serve as a relevant tool for promoting pro-environmental awareness.
