Crafting a Photorealistic Wrist Watch

Crafting a Photorealistic Wrist Watch
My concept for this project was to create a detailed wrist watch vector graphic in a photorealistic style using Adobe Illustrator. The main objective was to meticulously create a nice visual representation of a watch, while sticking to a photorealistic aesthetic. By using Illustrator’s tools and techniques, I tried to simulate the intricate details and textures of a real watch to show a high level of realism.
Sketches
During the first stages of the project, I created some sketches to try and explore various design elements and shading techniques. My sketches show different parts and pieces of the watch, as well as different shading ideas to achieve the desired photorealistic effect. Through this process, I experimented with different shapes, transparencies, and gradients to refine the overall composition. Each sketch was a step in guiding me towards the final product of the watch vector graphic.
Drafts
Throughout my development process, I received feedback from peers and mentors to get fresh perspectives and refine my work further. One of the key pieces of feedback I received was to add texture to the face of the watch and the band to create a brushed metal texture for added realism. I also received suggestions to incorporate different colored spots to show reflected light and colors, darken the hour marks, and refine the shape of the gradient or shadow on the silver bezel. I implemented the suggested changes by adding the texture and shading to enhance the overall realism of the watch. I paid close attention to refining the details of the watch face and band to make sure they accurately conveyed the desired brushed metal texture. I also fine-tuned the color palette and shading to emphasize the play of lights and shadows.
Finishing Touches
The photo reference is on the right. My vector graphic is on the left.
My final image successfully met my objectives that were set at the start of the project. Through careful attention to detail and a methodical approach to design, I have created a vector watch that displays photorealism. By using techniques such as transparencies, gradients, and blending modes, I have brought the watch to life. By using feedback and refining my work, I have made a final image that is high quality. The addition of textures, color variations, and subtle distinctions in shading not only enhances the realism of the watch but also creates a sense of depth. My creative process for this project has been a journey of exploration, experimentation, and refinement.
