TAICHI
A BALANCE FOR WORK

The ideal workspace should seamlessly fit into users’ multiple tasks in work, and this is where the “design thinking” comes into focus.

The design is inspired from Chinese Taiji philosophy, the great ultimate. Taiji is the source and union of the two primary aspects of the cosmos, yang (active/positive) and yin (passive/negative).

Therefore, the designer studied the negative and positive space of an office and furniture in order to create a balance compact work space.

Sides of a table are seen as the negative space. The designer created a gap as buffer around the sides to prevent objects from falling out from table. The gap also functions as the room for wirings. Meanwhile, the groove on the side facing out is for additional accessories to hang up to transform it becomes functional. The structure comes with cushion foam upholstered with leather or fabric to serve comfort and flexibility for thicker wire to run in and out.

Table surface is a positive space. There are primary and secondary work surface. In order to accomplish the idea of balance, the designer studied the usual movements of users while working. Users’ movements come from two pivot points (left & right hands). From that, the intersection of two pivot points is the primary work surface and the rest is secondary. Hence, the form of a balanced table surface was designed to cater both left and right handed users.

The panel is to serve as board panel and secondary storage. User may write notes, do presentation and hang up accessories on both sides of the panel.

The leg structure is to provide support and flexibility. Caster wheels at the legs are to let furniture to move around within a space that makes work flexible and productive. In another option, the table height is adjustable with hydraulic-lift pedal to cater user comfortable posture.

Taichi is designed to cater small office and home office users’ basic habits and practices. Taichi balance up the working space to make it organized and ergonomically suits user movements. It also provides flexibility in terms of work location, height and additional accessories.
