Borders / Fronteras

Leadership Class at SVA.

In my search of leaders who have brought to life a collaborative culture. I turned to theater. The way actors are trained is unique. All actors have similar basic training and collaboration is a common factor. An actor looses him or herself into a group consciousness. They need to be connected with their bodies, the stage and their fellow actors. They need to feel one another in order to act accordingly. They even improvise anticipating each other moves.

In theater people live and breathe the collaboration principles in order to reflect and condense life in successful ways.

This case study, in which I also contributed as director assistant, designer and friend, has showed me concepts of collaboration and leadership applied into daily human interactions.

Leaders to be leaders need people to lead. Today a lot of programs and courses are focused on creating leaders. According to Mehrdad Baghai and James Quigley, it is a mistake to think that leaders can be formed by a curricula and detached from a context, group or events that are calling them to lead.

The right to assembly (this can be digital or non-digital), enhance by new and old technologies was and is the primary element to create any social movement. Without groups and people sharing time together we wouldn’t have collaboration, we wouldn’t have leaders, we wouldn’t have change.
We shouldn’t be shaping a society of leaders, we should be shaping a society of collaboration in which new forms of leadership can emerge. The conditions in which leaders emerges are the ones that determine the kind of leader we will have. If we want collaborative leaders, we will need to have a collaborative society.
