Connecting the Past and the Future

This assignment "Designer Exhibition" which entailed a fictional exhibition titled "Connecting the Past and the Future" showcasing works of two designers of two different periods (Historical and Contemporary). Our deliverables included  two posters featuring the two artists each done in the artist's style, an invitation combining both artists' styles and a catalogue.  The artists I decided to use are Lou Dorfsman (historical) and Stefan Sagmeister (contemporary).

I chose these two artists because I absolutely love their work. As designers we tend to get caught up in it all, especially where typefaces are concerned. How do we find the perfect one? Well, Stefan bypassed all the fuss by simply using his own handwritings or by reusing materials. He also sometimes bypasses the stress of finding models by using himself.  Contrastingly, Lou Dorfsman is more subtle. I was intrigued by his beautiful use and placement of text. Upon research, I noticed he rarely used image, but his text was never boring.

Stefan Sagmeister
I used myself for imagery and an handwritten font. Yes, unfortunately, I was still caught up trying to find the perfect handwritten font similar to what his would look like. To tie the design back to Jamaica where the exhibition would be held I displayed myself as a Rastafari, smoking weed. I also translated the English paragraph to Patois.
Lou Dorfsman
This layout was inspired by one of Lou's works. However, I replaced the English words with Jamaican-related terms such as our year of Independence. Similarly, I translated the English words to Jamaican Creole, otherwise known as Patois.
