TechSoup Global, a nonprofit that educates other nonprofits about how to leverage technology, wanted to better understand the characteristics of the large online community they had built. I used a variety of social media analysis tools including NodeXL, Facebook Insights, Twitalyzer, SocialMention, and TwitterStats to provide them with multiple data visualizations that called out actionable insights. With this insight, they were able to identify strategic growth areas to focus their community expansion efforts and expand their spheres of influence.
One area of focus we identified was the related themes of philanthropy, development and giving. This map shows the relationships between the hashtag terms used by each type of organization. Since foundations, individuals and nonprofits were all using disparate language to talk amongst their networks, TechSoup had an opportunity to bridge the conversations and become a socia media hub around the theme of funding change.
