Shark Week Hits Western Europe – with a JAW-some Lineup of FIN-spiring Events
Shark Week hits beaches, ponds and even the skies across Western Europe as fins and warning signs pop up across the region. The European population can breathe a sigh of relief however, as the Shark Week pranks are revealed, with prizes up for grabs!
In the UK, visitors to FINS-bury Park boating lake in London were treated to a “JAWS-dropping” scene. Joggers, dog-walkers and early morning commuters spotted what appeared to be a Great White Shark fin slicing through the water. Luckily for the boaters, it was just a mechanical fin created by BAFTA award-winning art director and special effects designer Jamie Campbell. Check out the prank in this video, which has become a viral sensation covered across all of the UKs biggest papers.

In Discovery’s London HQ, staff were treated to celebrations too as two shark clad employees handed out shark cake-pops across the building. A screening of Great White Serial Killer was also on offer, washed down with ‘shark blood’ (cranberry juice) and shark fin cupcakes.
In Germany, Sky’s head offices were given a Shark Week makeover as a plastic shark, and two TV screens showing the Shark Week promo were set up in the lobby. Sharks also infiltrated Sky’s beach volleyball tournament as the Discovery Networks Germany team sported ‘Bite-Me’ t-shirts and participants and spectators were invited to get their Shark Week pictures taken in front of a photo cut out board.
Next week, Benelux will join the shark frenzy. In Belgium, shark warning signs will be erected along the beaches and an airplane trailing a Shark Week flag will fly above. Spectators who post a picture of the plane to Facebook or Twitter will be entered into a prize draw. A competition will also run on the Dutch and Belgian Discovery websites offering viewers the chance to swim with sharks at a local theme park.
France isn’t just going shark mad for a week, but for a whole month, giving away prizes every week on Facebook, including shark plush toys, and posting daily facts about the renowned predators.
