These works are born of a decade’s fascination with small iterations and subtle manipulations. In NEW TOPOGRAPHIES, I seek to capitalize on a dimensional illusion that occurs in tight juxtapositions of lines. A third dimension emerges, evoking a sense of surface in all three axes.

These pieces are realized through custom software that generates huge unique terrains with each pass. Visually complex fields are born from a simple set of rules:

(1) Generate three horizontal lines that have peaks and valleys. The lines should be expressed as a series of 2 dimensional points.

(2) Generate a color palette.

(3) For each frame, draw a line on the screen, moving downward a couple pixels. The line's points are an interpolation of two of the “source” lines, modulated over time by a number of algorithms.

Numerous terrains are generated by the software. Upon completion, the process of examination and curation begins. I inspect and traverse these pseduo-landscapes, seeking interesting movement, unique features, and pleasing compositions. I'm hunting for signal within the noise.

Crops of the terrains are determined, and parameters are sent back into the custom software in order to render out the cropped high resolution images suitable for print.

The final step is a post-production one – the renders are brought into Adobe Photoshop for manual color manipulation and further cropping before arriving at the final series of images.
