Wandering Horizons: Tales of the Open Road
This is the final assignment for the subject illustration. The first thing we had to do this period was figure out who we are in this society. Which is quite a big question if you ask me. Because I had no idea what I want to do after school this was a real problem for me. To help solve this problem my teacher told me to just write down the things I like, so here is that result:
When I had that figured out, the next step was to fill out a little form where you describe your strong points, weaknesses, market threat and market opportunity. Here is my form:
The next step was (suprise) also a struggle as I had to decide on what to actually illustrate and make. So I had a bit of a brainstorm and just wrote down some ideas.
After a round of feedback from my teacher we decided that I should make an illustration for an escapism game. After some more struggling I came up with a story and then after a week or soI decided I didn't like it. So I started over again. Here are the 2 stories with the continued idea on the right side.
I also made moodboard with both stories, but they're in 1 Pinterest board so here it is:
Ofcourse the next step was sketching. I drew a few campers and then realised that the inside of the camper is much more interesting to look at because that is where all the stories will be collected. So that is the sketch I continued with. Before the feedback I had also worked on a outside view of the camper but it's environment didn't say much about the game and it honestly did not make much sense. Therefore I focussed on the inside of the camper and then due to time issues I could not continue working on the other drawing of the outside of the camper unfortunately.
Because I still want to show this part of my process as well I put it down below. I spent some time on it and it was progress nontheless. So here it is even though It had to be abandoned.
So here is the progress of the final image! At last! Enjoy looking at it :)
As you can see in the progess there is 1 point that makes such an impact. It gives the whole image just that cozy vibe that it needed and it made the whole come together. Through the progress I was really struggling with how to stylize and texture this whole image. At that point I only had the flat colors and I had to figure something out. So I used some experimental brushes in Photoshop and suprisingly, that worked! So after I figured out the textures I had to figure out the lighting. It's a funny thing what you can do in Photoshop. Because I will show you the layer I used for my shading here:
So I used the layer you see up above and put the blending mode on it to "overlay". Which changed the whole image to my liking.
Finally we've reached the ending and I'm actually really happy with my end result. I really haven't been drawing for long in my life and this piece makes me proud of how far I've come already. So thank you for the lessons, ideas and patience!
Underneath here just a few items highlighted:
- A book where the player collects the flora of places the player has been.
- A cassette.
- A Polaroid camera.
- Record player.
- Mysterious key.
- Pictures of the stories the player can collect.
- A coffee mug that the player receives after making a friend on their journey.
- A fishing rod that the player receives after an adventure.
- LP Record which you collect more of the further your journey goes.
