Innovation: Zero Waste

This project was for a module in the final year of my degree. I was required to take an innovative topic as my inspiration and design a collection based on the research that I did. I also had to toile then make two of the outfits I had designed.

I chose to use the concept of zero waste as my inspiration. I take great interest in eco and sustainable fashion, so my idea was to create a luxury brand that focuses on sustainability. I fully researched zero waste designers including Holly McQuillan and Mark Liu to get an understanding for how current designers go about making a zero waste garment. After much experimentation I chose to make my collection using zero waste pattern cutting. I wanted to use an aspect of nature as my inspiration for designing my collection as eco fashion focuses on being nature-friendly. I used characteristics of the ocean such as its transparency, contradicting textures, and blue/grey colour pallet. As I wanted my collection to be sustainable it had to have a look of timelessness so that garments would be less likely to end up as textile waste; they would not go out of fshion. Once my collection was complete I chose two outfits to construct, then had them modelled and professionally photographed.
