GOOGLE DOODLE DESIGN
Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepage which is designed by artists to celebrate holidays, events, accomplishments, and remarkable significant historical figures.
For this project, I chose Bedri Baykam to create a Google Doodle design because he is one of the most famous Turkish contemporary artists who I appreciate a lot. I designed the doodle to celebrate the influential figure Bedri Baykam’s birthday, on April 26th. He has a disruptive attitude. He is a modern, enlightened, and secular figure for Turkey. He is a very important figure in Turkish art history with a different stance than most other artists. Although we know him mainly from his paintings, he is a multidirectional artist who is an also author, politician, journalist and working with many associations. Furthermore, Baykam is recognized for his diverse range of creations including paintings, sculptures, and installations. In addition, he is the founder of the film production and publishing company Piramid and Piramid Art Center that hosts both Turkish artists and international exhibitions which makes it a unique production, presentation and sharing area. During his career, he had various solo exhibitions in many countries and participated in group shows.
In his personal exhibition titled "Metamorphosis", which was my source of inspiration, we understand once again how Baykam lives in harmony with the motto of constant change and the risk factor. But the leading part of my inspiration while creating the design was his painting called ‘Nevermind’ which is a mixed media production made in 2022.
Also, I used the signature colors of Google, so I did not need to explicitly write “Google”. Moreover, I drew his figure in front of this colorful background using his typical symbol images such as his hat, his glasses, his curly graying hair, and his scarf.
It is not just a celebration of an artist’s birthday, rather a show of respect to his creativity and contributions to contemporary Turkish art.
