My senior thesis film, "Sad Robot :(" took me the better part of my junior and senior years at SVA to complete. It's about a robot who is sad, and a girl who . . . is not sad. I spent about a year designing the characters, environments, storyboards and visual style, and then spent most of senior year animating.
My film won the SVA Computer Art Outstanding Achievement Award, and got an honorable mention in the Metropolitan Film Festival of New York in the category of Student Animation, and an honorable mention in the Los Angeles Reel Film Festival, plus award for Best Sound Design.

Sketches and paintings I drew during the development of my film.
Design sketch of the forest area with the great tree.. This area took the longest amount of time to design and finish. In fact, I had already animated most of the scenes in this area before I finished the environment.
Early Robot designs. I later decided that his eyes shouEarly Robot designs. It only took me a couple weeks to decide on the final design.
Early girl designs. It took me much longer to settle on a design for the girl. Early sketches were more realistic, these sketches were an attempt to make her shorter and more cartoon-like (though she ended up being taller than the robot, anyway). It took me several months before I settled on her final design, and her hair color mysteriously changed from blueish purple in early production to bright pink by the end.
Officially, she does not have a name. I always referred to her as "Girl". If anyone asks, her name is Rose.
