Project Brief

This project required us to research, conceptualise, script, storyboard, design and animate a 40-180 second video of information visualisation essentially an: 'infomotion'. The theme for the brief was ‘I’ve always wondered ...’ such as being curious about why a mechanism or process works or functions in a certain way. The information in the video needed to contain well connected ideas from different sources in order to create something original. The presentation of this information needed to be applied in an interesting and informative way to be relevant and meaningful to the audience viewing it.

An in-depth workshop on narrative arcs, genre, script writing and visual rhetoric was conducted before the final product.
The goal of these workshop sessions were to create a strategic approach resulting in a conceptually appropriate, well researched and visually stimulating piece. A well constructed narrative arc was needed to unpack interconnected ideas and patterns by means of a seamless storyline.

The second phase of the project involved recording script voice overs, sourcing music scores and sound effects, mixing, cutting and editing the audio to create an impactful mood and pace of the video. The interplay between voice and image was encouraged to suggest arguments in a clever and subtly suggested manner cutting out unnecessary and obvious imagery. The visual style chosen needed to be appropriate to the type of narrative and information presented. Tests were conducted on the ability for the style to be executed in motion and a fourth-year level of animation skills in After Effects.

Design Strategy

Persuasions Partner in Crime: Repetition Rhythm and Rhyme. Our "I've always wondered" insight was informed by the curiosity as to why humans are so drawn to pattern and repetition. While conducting our research and development, we discovered the psychological effects of repetition, rhythm and rhyme (the 3R's). This revealed how the 3R’s can be used positively and negatively. Our infomotion follows how they manifest in our world, affect us and have been used against us.

The sound effects, music scores and tone of voice paired with the visual style were strategically chosen to emphasise certain moods and tones during the video. The introduction visuals and atmospheric sound emphasise the satisfying beauty of pattern in nature and human cultures. We presented our information in clean text and diagram animations that emphasise the mood and tone of the particular scene. The climax of our narrative turns to a darker and more dramatic approach to illustrate how the 3R's have been used in a negative way. A harsh impact was created with jumpy visuals to juxtapose the peaceful beginning narrative. The final outro sequence mirrors the beginning with a neutral tone of beautiful visuals showing the metaphorical impact that the 3R's have on us.

Process Work

This is a small amount of our process work that shows a summary of the steps we followed in order to create the final infomotion. We started by researching why humans love rhythm, repetition and rhyme. Then we began plotting our ideas using a script analysis arc which acted as a starting point for writing our script. After refining and finalising our script we gathered visual inspiration and did our own media exploration in order to come up with a strong visual style and language. Finally, we brainstormed our visual ideas by sketching rough storyboards for our script before creating the final visuals in illustrator.

Process work was a collaborative effort between all members.

Moodboard

What we aimed for in our visual style was to show repetition, pattern and rhythm in the imagery and motion.

Colour Palette

Our primary colours are clean slate white, background blue and persuasive red. These were used to set the overall mood and tone of the different scenes. The stark contrasts between the colours highlighted the juxtaposition between the narrative's content. Our tint and highlights were strategically placed in scenes that required the playful and light nature of the colours.

Visual style decisions were a collaborative effort between all members.

Our Story
Youtube Descriptor
Have you ever wondered why some songs are so catchy or why rhymes get stuck in your head?
From our heartbeats and footsteps to music and poetry, humans use repetition, rhythm, and rhyme to make sense of the world.
These are powerful tools that have a fascinating effect on our brains, but is this always a good thing?

Storyboards

Sequence 1 - Opening scene

The narrative begins in with taking the viewer through the journey of understanding how the 3R's are a prevalent part of our world. Our opening sequence captures a close up on how they interact with us daily. The visual narrative encapsulates a sense of beauty, wonderment and awe.

Sequence 2 - The foundations of theory

This sequence acts as the narrative guide through the theory of understanding how repetition, rhythm and rhyme affect us. It is the foundation for the informative nature of the video.

Sequence 3 - The turning point

This marks the turning point in our narrative arc we delve into the more sinister side of rhythm repetition and rhyme. We use punchy visuals to take the viewer through the wide range of examples of how our emotions have been used against us.

Sequence 4 - The resolution

We circle back to the style and tone of the beginning reflecting on the understanding of how repetition rhythm and rhyme are powerful instruments that sway opinion, evoke emotion and drive action.
