Project brief

Conduct a rigorous investigation that allows for an exploration of maps in your chosen. The focus could be cultural/political/social/scientific/geographical/ subjective/utopian etc. Experiment with opportunities leveraged from your research to develop an appropriate format (film/ book/typeface/installation/etc.) and arrive at a creative typographic solution that effectively communicates your chosen message to your intended audience.
Design Strategy

This brief led me on a journey to explore dialectic maps: a type of a map that plots the geographical variations within a language from particular pronunciations to unique names for the particular things. African American Vernacular English (AAVE) was the chosen dialect of focus. My project, Talking While Black, is a glossary/dictionoarythat provides a cultural and historical exploration of AAVE. This design outcome necessitates a particular layout which is consistent, particularly with definitions. Variations and mixtures of fonts, and a bold use of colour illustrate the lively characteristics of AAVE. The colour palette is a subdued version of the red, green and yellow associated with Black History Month in the USA.
