Projeto gráfico, diagramação e colagens para o livro "Light", uma coletânea de poesias, fotografia e arte de Sophia Poposvski, editado por Anastasia Osling.

O livro, como definido por Anastasia, é um vislumbre da curta e brilhante vida de Sophia, que só teve dezesseis anos por aqui, mas que deixou uma obra extensa, na forma de poesias, imagens e desenhos que foram inspiradores para a criação deste projeto gráfico. Em seus poemas, ela explora os temas típicos da idade, ao mesmo tempo em que aborda o luto e a perda, com a complexa perspectiva do enfrentamento de um câncer na adolescência. Nas palavras da editora, "esse livro é sobre tentar sentido em tudo, mas também não levar a vida tão à sério".

Para o projeto gráfico, então, a ideia era construir algo que trouxesse a energia do universo lúdico da adolescência, tendo como guia a criação de uma estética jovial, humana e calorosa. Para isso, três motes centrais guiaram a criação: o artesanal, o lúdico e as texturas.

Busquei realizar as criações de uma forma completamente artesanal, explorando recortes e materiais diversos que trouxessem texturas interessantes, como o guache e o giz pastel, interagindo e dialogando com as várias e diversas artes de Sophia, através de colagens. Os desenhos de Sophia, as texturas de guache e outros detalhes surgem em meio às páginas de poesia, por vezes como ilustrações e por outras como intervenções lúdicas, que aparecem em meio ao texto, buscando representar a energia de como seria um real diário de uma adolescente.

"Light" foi um projeto único e muito especial que tive o prazer de realizar. Foi muito especial trabalhar para e junto às artes de Sophia, um material que vai seguir me inspirando para muito além deste projeto.

Design, page layout and collages for the book "Light", a collection of poetry, photography, diary entries and artwork by Sophia Popovski, edited by her mother Anastasia Osling.

The book, as defined by Anastasia, is a glimpse into the short, incredibly bright light of Sophia. She only had sixteen years with us, but left a expense body of work, in the form of outstanding artwork that range from poetry through photography and illustrations, that were the inspiration behind the development of this graphic project. In her poems, she explores themes typical from her age, laughter and love, all while tackling themes of grief and loss, addressing the hardness of facing cancer at a such young age. In the editor's words, "this book is about making sense of it all, and not taking life too seriously either".

For the editorial project, the idea was to built something that evoked the energy of teenage life, showcasing Sophia's uniqueness and "heart on her sleeve" style, having as a goal the creation of a warm, fun and human aesthetic. With that, three main keywords guided my process: artisanal, playfulness and texture.

I challenged myself to make the collages in a mostly artisanal way, which involved a lot of cutting, drawing and scanning, while exploring various mediums that showcased different and fun textures, like gouache and crayons, all that while interacting and maintaining a dialogue with Sophia's art and style. Her artworks, the gouache textures and other little fun details appear amongst the poetry pages, as typical illustrations at times and, in other, as playful interventions breaking text and conventions, striving to represent the energy of a real teenager's diary.

"Light" was a unique and special project that I had the pleasure of being involved with. It was a remarkable experience to work for and with Sophia's art, a body of work that will keep on inspiring me for way beyond this project.

Em uma das nossas conversas, Anastasia me passou um documento com algumas curiosidades e informações sobre Sophia. Dentre elas, o fato de que ela colecionava os mais diversos objetos que tinham formato de coração. Essa curiosidade especifica ficou comigo e pensei que deveríamos inserí-la com destaque no livro. Assim, surgiu a ideia de produzir diversas artes de coração, feitas com os mais diversos acabamentos (recorte, tecido, guache, giz), e juntar com alguns registros que tínhamos dos corações da coleção de Sophia e, assim, espalhá-los pelo livro, "escondendo-os" nas outras composições e colagens. Abaixo, a colagem no final do livro que reúne os vários corações, e duas das páginas com "corações escondidos"

In one of our meetings, Anastasia sent me a document with facts about Sophia. One of them was the fact that she collected hearts. This specific curiosity stuck with me, and got me thinking that we needed to reflect this on the book somehow – which sparked the idea of producing various heart-shaped arts, made with the most diverse mediums (fabric, gouache, crayons, paper), together with some images with had of the actual hearts from Sophia's collection, and then hidden them throughout the book. Below, the collage by the end of the book that showcase all the hearts, and two of the pages that had "hidden hearts".

O livro foi lançado em Setembro de 2023, com uma leitura de poemas realizada na livraria The Last Bookstore, em Los Angeles. Tive o prazer de participar do evento, um momento muito especial onde pudemos celebrar Sophia e suas criações através do livro, junto de sua família e amigos. The book got launched in September 2023, in a reading event that took place in The Last Bookstore, a landmark of downtown Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of attending the event, where we could celebrate Sophia and her art through the book, reading her poems and essays together with her family and friends.
