With 450 000 children in South Africa living in orphanages or foster care, the opportunity to hear folktales from their own grandmothers
will never happen.

Through Nedbank’s Children's Affinity program with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, we partnered with toy makers, sound engineers,
and an occupational therapist to create a one-of-a-kind sonic teddy bear: One that preserves South African folk tales, while soothing a child’s
nervous system, called: Gogo Bear.

This sonic teddy bear comes in the top three languages in South Africa; Zulu, Xhosa & Tswana, and each bear plays three stories whenever
you press the heart, left or right hand.

The stories are told by grandmothers, and each carry an important lesson at the end for children to carry throughout their lives.

The choice of fabric on the heart is an ode to itshali; a blanket traditionally worn by grandmothers around their waist or over the shoulders.
This is a piece of uGogo we’ve sewn into the bear, as these stories would always be told from the heart.

Through the weight of a 1.5kg bear, Gogo Bear activates deep touch pressure stimulation, which helps regulate a child’s overloaded system, promoting a sense of calmness.

This won BRONZE at The Loeries.
This is a dedication to our late grandmothers :).
