An inside look at the Jot Touch with Pixelpoint™

Industrial Design

The Jot Touch with Pixelpoint™ is the evolution of the previous Jot Touch, a pressure sensitive, Creative Cloud connected stylus for iPad. It combines Pixelpoint™ technology and an updated design to give artists a feature-rich, incredibly natural drawing experience. We put a lot into it so that you can get a lot out of it.
Design exploration for the Jot Touch with Pixelpoint™ began in February, 2013, when we were also working on the Jot Script (link to Script page). Developing the two simultaneously, we were able to use it as an opportunity to define our design language, our materials palette and our brand.

We knew that, as our company grows, our products needed streamlining and rethinking. Therefore, both models were designed to communicate precision and follow Adonit’s principle of Bold, Purposeful and Passionate. Because Jot Script launched first, we used it as a learning experience for Jot Touch with Pixelpoint. We refined the design, explored new materials and added improvements to the Pixelpoint antenna.

Our exploration began, as always, with the user. We focused on the stylus’s relationship with artists’ hands—how people interacted with the stylus, their natural grip and how they used the shortcut buttons. This influenced a lot of the design decisions. The grip, made from a durable rubber, was extended to allow for a wider range of holding styles. The buttons grew larger, and extend further beyond the surface of the pen, highlighting their importance in a more efficient creative process.

Visually, we sought to match solid construction with a bold design. We added an anodized aluminum, and unified materials across the shortcut buttons, the emitter and the charging base. The overall effect is sleek, strong and graceful; it’s easy to imagine this tool creating incredible digital art.

The feature that truly sets our newest Jot Touch apart from the competition is the 3.18mm Pixelpoint tip. Yes, it’s larger than the tip on the Jot Script. It’s also better. Constructed from PET over a metal substrate, the tip is rated to last for 90 kilometers of drawing distance. The cobalt cone that connects the fine point tip to the barrel of the pen houses an improved Pixelpoint antenna, giving users enhanced precision and incredible accuracy.

We wanted to continue our mission of giving artists a natural drawing experience, and the Jot Touch with Pixelpoint is a major step forward for us. The fine point tip slides across the glass with grace, but the Pixelpoint™ technology provides control through enhanced precision and accuracy.

Digital artists familiar with the previous Jot Touch will recognize many of the features in our latest version. It’s pressure sensitive, has programmable shortcut buttons and connects via Bluetooth 4.0 for increased accuracy. But we threw a few new features into the mix and made improvements on a few of the familiar ones.

As far as new features, the headline is our collaboration with Adobe to make the Jot Touch with Pixelpoint the first third-party stylus that’s Creative Cloud connected. Stay tuned to our blog for more information on the partnership, and where it could go from here. As for benefits right now, Creative Cloud members will be able to copy & paste between devices, open files saved to the cloud and access Adobe’s color inspiration service, Kuler.

Palm rejection is a key feature for us. We’re proud of the steps we’ve made, but are looking to make the feature even easier for developers to incorporate into their apps. Our newest SDK should go a long way in updating palm rejection, and giving users an incredibly natural drawing experience regardless of app.

Around the office, we talk a lot about breaking down barriers between thought and creation. One of the ways we accomplish that with our newest Jot Touch is by making the connection process as quick and easy as possible. We removed every barrier we could so all the user has to do is hit the power button, place the pen to the screen to connect it, and start drawing. The Jot Touch with Pixelpoint never needs to power off; it’ll go sleep after being idle, and resume quickly and easily when it’s needed again.

We’re incredibly proud of the new Jot Touch, but we’re even more proud of the work that you’ll make with it. Every design choice and feature, both those included and those left out, was picked to empower artists with a more natural and efficient creative process. To be honest, it’s kind of selfish. We love seeing Jot-created art that our users send to us, and the better products we make, the more incredible their art gets. Keep submitting your work at art@adonit.net. The things you make, make our day.
