Hidden & Seeking (2023)
“Not since Adam has any human known such solitude.”
Michael Collins

30 times astronaut Michael Collins orbited the Moon in the command module Columbia, the majority on his own, as his fellow crew descended to the lunar surface, searching, exploring and stepping through the very boundaries of what were once the outskirts of human endeavour.

For 48 minutes of each rotation, there was no possible contact with Earth, as he became the most distant, hidden and isolated human ever to have existed. Despite this potentially overwhelming moment, he reported not a sense of fear, nor loneliness, instead ‘awareness, anticipation, satisfaction, confidence, almost exultation’. Such calmness, the result of a profound grounding in his belief of the 3 man mission, and their unifying quest, in the name of Man. He even found his time on the far side of the Moon as ‘relaxing’.
Such calmness and focus, can only be an inspiration for anyone that reads it. You may not be orbiting, or walking on the Moon, but each day is an exploration of your own boundaries, dreams and missions. Each night you can see the Moon radiating these memories, possibilities and vision. Stay true, stay calm, stay on course.
If you search on the piece, Tranquility Base is subtly marked, and in the right situation, the Moon will glow like the very one that has been gently looking down on us our entire existence, & beyond.
