Citius – Altius – Fortius
History of Olympic Games from Athens 1896 to Rio 2016
The Olympic Games, represented with five rings, three different medals, and a flame that is never extinguished, has become the most significant intercontinental festival that symbolizes the unity and peace of the global community beyond how its first event was initiated as a sports competition in 1896. Since then, it has grown much bigger and larger than ever before in a number of ways, such as participating countries, athletes, and the number of sports. In this regard, Citius – Altius – Fortius, which is the Olympic motto in Latin for “Faster – Higher – Stronger,” comprehensively reflects the growth of the Olympics Games that have been held in both Summer and Winter.

From the very beginning, there were establishments, and rare disappearances of sports that composed the complete Olympics Games. As the event gets bigger, each sport becomes more complex in that it is specifically broken down into a variety of disciplines based on both genders and types of sports. Each discipline is persistently kept track of with its detailed changes from the initial introduction to the occasional discontinuance. Moreover, an additional subject about small and big issues that have occurred at the Olympics shows that there have been always politically or socially conflicted controversies. It apparently contrasts with the fact that the IOC pursues socially and politically neutralized and purely concentrated sporting events, which seems self-evidently unlikely.
