RIVELINO THE ELÁSTICO GOAL

This developed as a testbed for book project on football and 70 of Taschen - The initial briefing included the reproduction of some memorable goals of that period and obviously could not miss the elastic Rivelino Carioca championship in 1975.

Roberto Rivelino barely used his right foot, other than for standing on, but his left was good enough to earn him 92 caps for Brazil. In fact, his stronger side was so effective that he popularised a one-footed dribbling trick that the rest of the world needed two feet to execute.  His calling card was the elástico, which involved, in one movement, shifting the ball back and forth with the same foot. He first performed the manoeuvre against Vasco do Gama in 1975, when, after toying with Alcir by standing still in possession for a full three seconds, he knocked the ball through the legs of his startled marker.

Rivelino then hurtled between Renê and Celso Alonso, the defenders, before wrong-footing Andrada, fooling the goalkeeper into thinking he would shoot left when he instead opted for the right. His Fluminense team were known at the time as the Tricolour Machine. Rivelino was certainly the engine.
