Прежде чем начать снимать этот проект, я долго ездил по разным детским домам Ленинградской области. Тогда я еще не знал, что конкретно хочу снимать.
Однажды, когда я в очередной раз делал тестовую съемку, мальчик, которого я фотографировал, сказал, что хотел бы быть в костюме человека-паука. В этот момент я понял что именно буду снимать.
Я попросил воспитателей детского дома раздать ребятам листки бумаги, чтобы они написали в них кем они хотят быть. Я подумал, что если я сфотографирую детей в образах их героев, мне удастся хоть немного превратить их мечты в реальность.
Еще я понял, что встречаясь с детдомовцами мы никогда не видим их реальных характеров. Свои переживания и страшные истории они скрывают за масками смеха и гостеприимства. Они прячутся за ними, как лес прячет свои тени за лапами ветвей. Узнать их по-настоящему так же сложно, как выйти из чащи лесов, которые их окружают.
Эти постоянные сравнения натолкнули меня на еще одну идею. Я подумал, что снимки природы, которая их окружает, помогут лучше понять неприступные детские сердца.
Их природа — это лес, полный опасностей, сказочных героев, мифов, в которые они верят, и светлых проблесков, которые дают им надежду. Таинственный и страшный, он все же готов распахнуть свои жуткие объятия и впустить тебя в доброе и прекрасное, таящееся глубоко внутри.

I was visiting different children’s homes of the Leningrad region long before I started making this project. Back then I didn’t know what exactly I wanted to accomplish.
One day, when I was making test shooting once again, a boy I was making a picture of said that he had wanted to be dressed as Spider-man. And it was a moment when I realised what I wanted to shoot.
I asked teachers at children’s home to give out pieces of paper so that kids would write down who they had wanted to be. I thought that if I make pictures of children dressed as their dream characters, I will manage to fulfil their aspirations, will somehow make them a reality.
At the same time, while meeting kids at an orphanage I realised that we never actually see their true nature. They always keep their feelings and dark stories to themselves, hiding everything behind the mask of laughter and hospitality. Children are hiding behind those masks just like forest is hiding its shadows behind the boughs of trees. It is almost as difficult to get to know these kids as to get out of the thick of the forest which surrounds them.
These persistent comparisons led me to one more idea. I thought that pictures of the nature surrounding the kids would make a better understanding of their detached and vulnerable hearts possible.
Orphans’ nature is a forest full of both, of threats, fairy-tale heroes and myths which they believe to be true and of flashes of light giving them hope. The forest, being enigmatic and dark, is still willing to open its uncanny arms and allow you into kindness and beauty that is hidden deep inside it.
This project is about children’s dreams, about their mysteries, reveries and their breathtaking lives hidden in themselves.
