EC Visitors’ Centre

Art Direction
and Graphic Design

The Visitor Center of the European Commission has undergone a major upgrade of its space. The center, located in front of the Berlaymont building, consists of several rooms and is arranged on two floors. Each space has been revised in its architecture and narrative. From the inclusion of a large LED wall in the photo opportunity area on the first level, to the installation of an 18-meter interactive wall in the main hall on the second level.

The communication concept is inspired by the principles of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, functional aesthetics, and inclusiveness. The design was conceived to inspire a "wow" effect by combining interactivity with visual and sensory experience.

The distinctive and dominant element of the narrative, the natural shape, draws inspiration from the official visual identity of the European Commission and the shapes and colors of nature such as plants, waves, blades of grass, and streams of water. The natural shape is a versatile and recognizable sign that accompanies visitors as they "explore." It is used both in print and in the creation of videos and user interfaces, making the Visitor Center a sinuous, dynamic, welcoming, and organic space.

The work involved several professionals and different companies. Architects, designers, audio and video technicians, in total about 50 people worked on the project for almost two years. The biggest challenge was to shape the client's expectations while maintaining a clear visual direction.
