The Emerald Shopping Center, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Concept proposal for The Emerald Shopping Center, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Design team: Global Ideas LLC 2014

"The crystal that is the symbol of freezing, but in a shopping mall it creates a warm, melting atmosphere."

Concept: The design brief is focused on the renovation and adaptive re-use of the building from 30s of the last century, originally built as a school then for years served as a dental clinic. The project should bring the fresh idea of the re-use, an extension to the existing building to increase the square meters, improve an occupancy and rentability of the indoor shopping center and create unambiguous identity of the building located on the main city artery "The Peace Avenue".
The new use should introduce a new concept for shopping that will embrace various products for middle class housholds from home appliances, electric materials, home decor, fashion apparels, shoes, kids' toys, the stationary, restaurants and coffee shops and create ever-changing buzz in the very center of the Ulaanbaatar. The idea behind the re-branding of the building came from the original name of the building "tuguldur" which in Mongolian means "perfect". The main concept is to create "the perfect" shopping experience for growing product oriented population iin Mongolia. Visual re-branding of the extended entrance clearly distinguish the old from the new in terms of the use of materials and the architectural language introducing the abstract shape of an emerald.
Interior layout brings variety in organization. There are three different shopping experiences: middle eastern souk, open market and european street.
