Eveline
Illustration

A piece to accompany a newly interpreted version of James Joyce's Eveline from Dubliners. Both the original story and the reworked version feature a main character who tries to leave home but fails in the end because they feel held back by fear and family obligations. I wanted to reference the original with the phrase 'Derevaun Seraun' engraved onto the anchor – a nonsense or possibly corrupted Irish phrase repeated by the mother of Joyce's Eveline.

The editor also asked for a small portrait of Joyce somewhere if possible, so he's made a little cameo on the anchor too.
