Module 2: The RE Chair

Cardboard Chair Project
Design Process
To start off the chair project everyone was assigned a space where they would have to come up with a chair made out of cardboard, that had to be usable. I was assigned the Corbusier Lounge which main purpose was for studying, but going inside the space I noticed that the space has become outdated and used for storage.
View of the Corbusier Lounge
I was excited that I got assigned the Corbusier lounge because I'm not a super modern person, I like modern things that have an old twist.
Step 1: Ideation
After visting the site I came up with sketches on how I would like my chair to look or what concept I would like the chair to represent.
Hand Sketches
Sketches using Adobe Illustrator
The concept I came up with was RE:
Step 2: Logo Making
I wanted my logo to represent redoing something so I came up with a logo that incorporated cardboard or tape that overlaped one another to represent how history overlaps one another and is chaotic.

4 Final Logos
Step 3: Model Making
This was the first time I ever created a model of any kind. I created three models and honestly they all helped my final product.
First design: Scaled to 1 1/2" model
Detail of 1 1/2" model
Second Design: Made out of cardboard 3" = foot scale
Third and Final Design before I created a final product
Final Chair Making Process
It took me about 40 hours to complete the project, along the way I faced many obstacles with getting sleep and many obstacles in my design, but in the end it all came together nicely.
I made myself building notes to make it easier on myself
Building Notes One
Building Notes Two
On each layer of my project I used a different technique
Layer One Technique
Layer 2 Technique
After the layers I started to think about how I wanted my top layer pattern to look.
Pattern Ideation: 100% recycled materials
I was inspired by mexican candy wrapper purses
Towards the end of making the project I messed with the levels of the chair and came up with something different than my third model.
Rotating the levels
The RE: Chair
Final Product
Inspired by the wall panels of east architecture hall along with traditional Mexican candy wrapper handbags, the RE: chair is a refreshing take on routine seating used for studying. The RE: chair was constructed using a stacking technique, the stacking gives the user the freedom to choose their pose for complete relaxation. Each layer of the RE: chair has its own color scheme made entirely out of recycled cardboard, on the final layer all the colors come together in a powerful way. Both sides of the chair reveal the true form of each layer, reminding the viewer that it is in fact cardboard. The RE: chair will have you reevaluating where you choose to study.
Final View and Stacking Technique
Detail of the recycled material on the seating area. The seating area looks like "Arm Rest", but they are in fact "Thigh Rest".

Module 2: The RE Chair

For my class we had to create a chair made out of cardboard, and this was my solution.
