Bio
I studied tapestry weaving at NCAD and Edinburgh College of Art, living for 6 years
in Scotland before moving to Hong Kong. In HK I was heartened to find a lot of interest
in contemporary tapestry and joined the vibrant scene of textile enthusiasts,
and as a result I found my artistic practice greatly enriched by my exposure to the material culture of East and South East Asia.  I went on to teach tapestry and art to a broad spectrum of the community in schools, museums and art institutions.

Artist Statement

Since returning to Ireland 15 years ago inspiration for my work has come from many sources. My response to the natural world but also from particular memories associated with places I have lived in or travelled to during my life. Sometimes, I select certain found “treasures” from nature which I place in woven containers to conserve the fleeting memory of place or feeling.
I often use materials that I feel convey a sense of space and harmony, such as linen
and silk.  Colour is important and creates a sense of depth.  I usually like to work out ideas on paper and paint or use photography to research colour ideas.

Building a tapestry pick by pick gives me a feeling of integrity that is hard won.  In a way, its making ‘something from nothing’. It speaks to me of time spent with myself
and consequently a feeling of connectedness to others.
