Tango Jalousie ~ A lifelong Affair

An interactive, immersive and multi-sensorial experience for teenagers and youths (20s,30s) that collectively with the participant explores the beauty, complexity and nuances in Tango Jalousie by Jacob Gade. It lets the participant experience the vastness of emotions, feelings and memories that are contained in the music while they co-create the outcome through their bodily reactions.

Form and motion is directed by Tango Jalousie (predesigned graphics). Colours change based on the  participant’s heart-rate variation. The total Duration of the experience inside the box is 4 minutes.  The first 30 seconds include monochromatic  visuals on the 2 walls. The remaining three and a half seconds include play of colours based on heart rate values of the participant.

The exhibition takes visitors on a ride while they hear, see, smell, touch, paint through their heartbeat and wander in a world of their own.
The project started when Tobaksgarden (the cultural heart of the Assens municipality) aimed at driving teenagers and youths interest in classical music through an exhibition on the Danish composer Jacob Gade. They realised that the stifling and intimidating atmosphere of a classical concert drove teenagers and youths away. We resolved this by designing a playful experience for Tobaksgarden that could speak to the target audience and make them interested in Jacob Gade's music.

Tango Jalousie (aural) along with the dancers movements (tango) was used as inspiration to create the visuals. The music piece was also translated to tactile and olfactory expressions for the participants. The three combined with the musical piece and the bodily reactions of the participant generates an immersive, interactive experience for the participant.

The overall play experience is aimed to let the participants / viewers to learn about the self through the music, more in an introspective manner; while indulging in feelings and memories through multiple senses. A bouquet of stimuli is deconstructed and put back together for the participant through Tango Jalousie creating a unique experience each time.
