Weaving has the potential to generate income and support livelihoods. Proper intervention with right research and strategies can help the weavers turn their craft into a sustainable source of income. However, this traditional craft have lost its charm mostly due to the introduction of machinery based weaving and exploitation of the craft.
Some good samaritans at Enhanse Foundation are doing their best to create a well interknit network of weavers in some parts of Rural Assam and working on a possible long term market linkage so as to enable the artist to get proper value of their craft.
DUGNAD, the initial phase of this project have created enhanced livelihood opportunity for 50 weavers, 8 artisans, 6 dyeing workers and 3 field assistant and 2 technical experts. More to add in the list as next phase of work is about to start. Continuous monitoring, sharing experiences and resolving weavers' issues are the key factors for making their working environment more effective. DUGNAD aims to support 5000 families in coming years.
