Designing a Perso-Arabic typeface for small size.

In an endeavor to expand my understanding of the intricate dynamics of legibility (and readability) in type design, I undertook my second MA in the International Master' Reading Type & Typography' at READSEARCH / PXL-MAD School of Arts from 2021-23. This journey has been instrumental in broadening my academic horizons and in amplifying my practical skills.

My MA project focused on the development of a Perso-Arabic typeface optimized specifically for small point sizes, ranging between 4–7 points. Given that the Perso-Arabic script is used and read by approximately 14% of the global population, enhancing its legibility at small sizes represents a significant contribution to typographic design research.

Existing Perso-Arabic fonts exhibit satisfactory legibility within the 12–16-point range. However, their legibility devaluates noticeably when set in sizes smaller than 8 points, creating barriers in contexts such as dictionaries, medical labels, and subtitles. My research has aimed to overcome this challenge.

Through systematic design research, I sought to identify the parameters that have a substantial impact on the recognition and differentiation of characters and their details at smaller sizes, specifically within the 4 to 8 point range. My objective was to design a typeface and to generate a font that not only meets a profound aesthetic finesse, but also addresses the crucial ergonomic aspects of type design for small point sizes in the Perso-Arabic script.
