Copy of The Business of Freelancing Comics (2023)

A series of comics done for CreativesAtWork, a media agency. These comics depict various aspects of freelancing, to promote their book The Business of Freelancing on social media. Click on each panel to view in full.
The 5 Types of "Difficult" Clients
The first 2 comics of the series are more straightforward. Each type of character is very specific and so each panel was drawn to illustrate their particular scenario. This is meant to show relatable, frustrating scenarious in a comical and engaging way.
5 Practical Strategies To Find Clients
For each series of comics, a different freelancer is featured. A diverse range of characters are shown in all comics. Content of this comic is fairly straightforward as well. Grayscale shading with solid black lines given the serious nature of a business comic.
Marketing Yourself As A Freelancer
As a more abstract, progressive topic, this comic was illustrated as a game. The freelancer must complete each level to progress to the next and eventually become certified competent. The freelancers from the other comics feature in the title card and Level 5: Networking. This comic is the most content-heavy as it shows the exercises the freelancer goes through to level up progressively.
3 Ways to Upgrade Yourself as a Freelancer
The final comic is more abstract and required coming up with scenarios in which the freelancer applies each technique.
Process
Draft sketches for The 5 Types of "Difficult" Clients
I was provided a powerpoint brief for all 4 comics that provided each title and points, as well as some ideas for how each comic can be depicted, along with the book for the complete explanations.

Conceptualising and sketching the draft at the start is the most challenging part of the process to come up with something from scratch. The aim of making sketches was to visualise how each panel looks as an image, without worrying about how nice it looks. Details and perspective adjustment would come later in the process. At this stage, I played around with different fonts and drawing styles. I eventually settled for a more solid line style with more background details, and Nunito font which is easier to read.
