Experimental Type Booklet  |  You Look Fine
__

This booklet features playful typography using selected texts from the novel ‘On Beauty’ by Zadie Smith. The chosen typeface is Courier. The aim of choosing Courier is to experiment with a typeface that has uncommon characteristics. Courier is a monospaced slab serif. The option used in this project is the second edition redrawn by Adrian Frutiger—the original is by Susan Nobrega. The booklet is Chinese/Japanese stab-bound by hand. Since it is hand-bound as opposed to machine-bound, it does not look perfect and upon close inspection, may have faults. This resonated with the meaning in the chosen  texts about imperfect beauty.
Brief:
The project calls for the designer to play with typography in an experimental fashion. The focus of the experimentation  is on negative and positive space; type size; kerning; variety within font family and line spacing. The designer will play with these elements within the boundaries of a single typeface and express typography through existing text selected by the designers themselves. The challenge of this assignment lies in the stretch between being given too many pages and limited text as part of the brief.
