La Diablada - Stickers
For this project, I wanted to represent and create different masks for a traditional dance called La Diablada. La Diablada is primarily performed during religious festivals and carnivals in Peru and Bolivia. The dancers, known as diablos or devils wear colorful and intricately designed outfits, including masks. The diablo masks typically have exaggerated, menacing expressions with bulging eyes, sharp teeth, and horns. They also symbolize power, mystery, and spirituality
Sketches
Sketches
In my sketches, I wanted to add some of the details mentioned before such as bulging eyes, sharp teeth, and horns. In this process, I also realized that I wanted to make my stickers symmetries.
Process
These were my first drafts of the masks. One of the comments I received regarding the first mask was that it looked very abstract, and that was not what I wanted to communicate mainly. Therefore, I decided to change the place of the different elements that I had in order to create a more concrete shape.
As you can see, I removed and added some elements of the first draft to get this final result. Which includes the eyes, horns, and teeth.

Color Palette

This was my color palette. I wanted to use the same colors for each sticker, using yellow as the background, and mint green for the faces. I also decided to use intense colors such as orange or pink because that's exactly how the original masks look.
I think that by following the feedback I received and including some principles of design like contrast (between the background and the mask), repetition (in colors and shapes), and grouping (the different elements of the mask), I was able to communicate the main idea of my stickers based on La Diablada.
