During that time, the french army was considered the greatest army of all time (represented as the french crown) and the mexican army was pretty "weak" (sombrero with the mexican flag colors). However, the mexican army was capable to counterattack and win at least that battle. And for that reason, as an irony, an army, supposedly weak, defeated the considered the greatest army at that time.
