The golden age of alpinism

As the world grew smaller and smaller, and explorers sought to fill in all of the blank spaces in the map, mountaineering emerged and gained a lot of public interest. While in began with scientific purposes, what emerged was man's desire to conquer the natural world. The most famous ascents by Victorian Era mountaineers during the "golden age of alpinism" led to the development of special gear specific to climbing.

-In many early civilizations and belief systems, mountains were viewed as temples where one could go to commune with God.
