"The Relentless Rhythm of Time" is an experimental and introspective film. The objective was to provoke introspection and a heightened awareness of the passage of time. Through the deliberate distortion of visuals and the reversal of sounds, the film aims to disrupt the conventional flow of time, inviting viewers to reflect on the transience of moments and the fleeting nature of relationships, experiences, and emotions. By evoking a sense of disorientation, the film encourages viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with time and the importance of being present in each passing moment.
The Music and the Sound Design were a big part of the overall aesthetic of the film and played a major role in driving and delivering the feeling and emotion that I wanted to deliver through the project. The film score features a single piano instrumental that I played live and recorded into Ableton as MIDI notes. In the first half of the film, the same instrumental is used, but it is played in reverse. This creates a very eerie sort off bittersweet ambiance that resonates really well with the distorted and reversed visuals of the film. Foley and sounds recorded on the scene are also used and are tucked under the music so they are very subtle, but you can hear them and feel them subconsciously, and they are also reversed. I recorded my own voice using an 'Audio-Technica AT-2020' condenser microphone. I processed the voice over to make it sound robotic. I wanted it to be gender vague and sound non-human, so I added pitch automations and variations that change throughout, giving it a very dystopian sound. The ambiance later on transitions from the reversed instrumental to the non-reversed instrumental very seamlessly as the film nears its conclusion. The sound and the visuals in this film are more of a textural experience, which allows viewers to feel and recognize their essence without clearly identifying it.
