NYC Mosaic Re-creation: 96th Street

96th Street Station has an exquisite mosaic in very subtle colors. I see the mosaics from afar at a high speed, where I still read them clearly. The broad strokes of the modern sans serifs, and strong contrasts do their functional job well.

The project here was to see what, if any, are Adobe Illustrator's limitations in making a mosaic in opus regulatum, while staying away from pixel art?

Detailed notes about the original, makes finding the 'design language' of the mosaic possible. The planning stage can not be skipped.
As I approach conclusion on this project, the question about Illustrator's capability to create mosaics with no other applications is clear. It's a major time saver.

The limitations come into play when tile stops being predictable, but they lead to opportunity to make creative decisions.

Below we have the decision to stay as close to the original as possible or an aesthetic variation that would cost less:
From lettering, to function, and finally to color and presentation, left to right.
