'Pond Life Laser Lamp' - by David Ross

About the collaboration:
Glasgow based designer David Ross was looking for designers, illustrators or artists to collaborate with on a new product he wished to sell in design furniture stockists around Glasgow; hoping to eventually roll out to other shops across the UK. The product is called 'The Pond Life Laser Lamp'. He was interested in any collaborators to produce artworks that stuck to the theme of Pond Life and had to be sensitive to the form of the lamp.
About the shade diffuser design:
My initial approach to this project was to focus on imagery of creatures that were not immediately recognisable and that we, as the onlooker, are observing specimens with microscopic devices. The idea was to obtain new found admiration for something that is not particularly mesmerising until closer inspection.
About the Lamp:
The lamps are made from laser-cut birch plywood. The diffuser is made of a heavy weight tracing paper (112gsm). The lamp is lightweight and delivered flat-pack as a small parcel. Its dimensions when built are approximately 405mm in height and 250mm in width. The total shade dimension to which the illustrations were to be displayed on were 165mm x 730mm.

'These small self-assembly lamp-kits have been inspired by David Ross' ongoing interest in ponds, particularly the creatures,plants and structures that make up a pond's ecosystem.
The paper lamp-shade diffusers are printed with pond-life themed artworks. Several original artworks are available, designed by artists, illustrators and designers based around the UK. The diversity of the designs makes for an incredibly versatil product, with each different design bringing a unique atmosphere, making them suitable for a variety of situations.'
