Brief - The Book 1Q84 - the complete trilogy is a series of 3 books written by the reowned author Haruki Murakami. The original book cover was designed by the designer Chip Kidd. Here is my attempt of designing the book cover taking the essence and story of the book in mind.
Quick Recap of the book 1Q84 - This book by Haruki is about two different versions of reality. In 1Q84, a staircase alongside a highway bridge, and a novel by young girl lead Aomame and Tengo into an alternative reality. In this other world, there are two moons, little people control events and manipulate people through actions of dangerous cult. Towards the end, Tengo and Aomame finally find each other in this changed world and together they escape and live happily.
Ideation process - Since this story kind of possess dark aura, I wanted it to be reflected in the design. The two set of hands and the crack in the middle explains how their past separated them but they are trying to reconnect in this alternate reality. The font chosen happens to give a haunted vibe which reflects all the darkness the book reflects upon.
