Skate-Beat is a rhythmic shoot em' up in which each level has its own music and enemies. The goal of the player is to reach the end of the level by destroying and dodging the waves of enemies.
 
Sk8 Beat - Playthrough no hit

This game is a semester project realized during my studies at ICAN.
Our theme was "Shoot Them Up".


I realized this project with Andrew Jacques (Game Artist and Level designer)
and Lilian Couffe (UI designer).

For my part, I took care of the programming, the game design
and the composition of the music and sounds.


Game Design

We wanted to make a Shoot Em Up based on the rhythm of a music. The player has to eliminate and avoid the different waves of enemies, which makes it a gameplay that mixes precision and timing.

This game a "Die and Retry", which is why the levels are short, have identifiable patterns and a high difficulty.

This game is playable with a controller and was created on Construct 3.


The player plays as Wilfried, a skater magician who can shoot magic projectiles all around him. He can move from left to right and switch from one rail to another.

 
When he gets hit by an enemy or an obstacle, he loses one of his 5 life points. The goal of the players is to reach the end of the level with at least one life.

During the level the player will encounter different types of enemies that each have their own way of working. They have been designed so that the player needs to move and shoot them. 


All enemy patterns are synchronized with the music ( movement, attacks, spawn... ), which adds to the game feel and the action prediction / timing.

Sound Design

I composed every music, jingles and some sound effects on FL studio. 
It follows the arcade style of gameplay and the retro graphics with 8-bit
sounds and a very 80s electro style. 


The music of the game evolves according to the progress of the player. Indeed, each level is divided into phases and each of them has its own musical section and its own enemies.

As long as the player has not eliminated all the enemies of a phase, the music loops.  
He has to aim and shoot at the enemies to progress through the sections.
