Designing with Glyphs: A Typographic Exploration

Designing with Glyphs: A Typographic Exploration
Left: Composition of glyphs from Neue Haas Grotesque Bold. Right: Composition of glyphs from Stemple Garamond Roman
In this project, I created two typographic compositions using the two typefaces, Neue Haas Grotesque Bold and Stemple Garamond, along with the principles of design. The objective is to create compositions that should feel complete and harmonious where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Another objective is to create an interesting composition using only letterforms/glyphs to demonstrate aesthetic skill and understanding and learn to identify the anatomical parts of letterforms.
Neue Haas Grotesque Bold composition in a 6.75in x 8in artboard
This composition uses a sans-serif typeface using Neue Haas Grotesque Bold. It focuses more on variety through scale and rotations of the elements. The small white "6" draws the attention of the viewer and redirects it towards the other elements creating visual flow. The wide strokes and flat ends create a strong and stable impression.
Stemple Garamond composition in a 6.75in x 8in artboard
In this composition, the main characters are from a serif typeface called Stemple Garamond. This composition takes advantage of the humanitarian and elegant form to make a more unified look. It is designed to be visually balance when a diagonal line cut the composition in half. The serifs and the typeface’s humanitarian strokes create a classic and refined appearance for the typography.
