This project called for a bike center located adjacent to Paine’s Park in Philadelphia. The project syllabus called for engaging the tunnel on the site. When in the tunnel, I was stricken by the qualities of light and space, which I translated into my design. The form of the tunnel is expressed in the spaces of this subterranean building. Skylights penetrate the ceiling to bring light to the space below and create a dramatic experience for the user. The program adheres to both the everyday cyclist as well as the more casual visitor. It has spaces that are more appropriate and suggested to each type of user, but are open to all, to encourage the mix of experience levels and the spread of bike culture.
