For this project, we were assigned the task to create a possible line of paper products for the local company Hester & Cook. From their website, I saw they dedicated a lot of their paper products to party/event planning. Using this as inspiration, I wanted to create an option for an upscale party theme that I had not personally seen explored--the theme being Scandinavian Folk Art. It is often simplistic in its geometry but highly decorative in its execution. I thought it was the perfect unexplored opportunity to create a I researched historical examples of Scandinavian folk art but decided to derive most of my inspiration from modern-day interpretations. I designed four separate pieces for the project, including a table runner, a place card, a napkin, and a placemat, but I believe that this theme has opportunity for more items.
I initially started designing a fox to be used for the table runner, but then decided I wanted to include more floral designs in the fox's coloration. Then, I designed a floral border to be repeated across the edge of the runner. This design is included in the other pieces I created.
Because the napkin pattern is mirrored along both axes, I decided that I could make a more intricate pattern if I designed it to be folded in fourths and open up into a more elaborate design.
This is the design if it were to be folded in fourth like a napkin.
