Stylistic Kitchen Utensils

In this project, artistic styles were explored and executed with graphic icons. Cutting board, knife, and skillet are expressed through particular styles, line drawing, circular, typographic, and geometric. Icons were designed with the Rules of Gestalt and essential logo principles.
Throughout my process, icons were sketched, executed, revised, and revised once more. After being given the prompt of kitchen utensils, I illustrated the objects multiple times through each style. Then came selecting one sketch per utensil per style and executing it in Adobe Illustrator. Choices formed after turning to Illustrator and pushing the icons further to what they are now. Work in progress advanced these icons through critique, and I took in classmates' suggestions completely. After revisions, icons are now in their final form.
After the first work in progress, icons were revised through their stroke width, color, and composition. Many of the icons were challenging to be viewed at a distance hence the thickening of specific strokes. These made the icons easily identifiable and enhanced their composition. The typographic icons were compromised with their arrangement, having an outline with no filled shapes and needing more cleverness. These icons were inverted. The most difficult icons to revise were the clipboards, as most are rectangular and included many efforts not to be mistaken otherwise. Icons were modified through critique and polished to their full potential.
Through this project, I learned about Illustrator techniques, shape building, and how to design a versatile icon. Rules of Gestalt were implemented, along with being conscious of white space and sizing. I enjoyed creating the icons, knowing they could continuously be improved.
