Situated in the center of Paris, France, the Louvre Museum is the world’s most visited museum and one of its largest. It is home to a vast collection of artworks and receives more than 9 million visitors every year.
The Louvre museum was constructed in the 12th century, during which it served as a fortress and subsequently home to the French royal family. Centuries later, the royal family deserted it, allowing the structure to be opened as a museum during the french revolution in the 18th century. The museum subsequently became home to thousands of artworks. However, following the end of Napoleon’s rule, several of them were returned to their origins.
Today, the Louvre museum houses more than 7,500 paintings, including the iconic Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. The museum predominantly features artworks from ancient civilizations, including Roman sculptures and Egyptian antiques. Some other notable works in the museum include Theodore Gericault’s “The Raft of the Medusa” and Antonio Canova’s “Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss.” The museum also features contemporary works like the “Self Portrait as the World’s Biggest Worm” by Jan Fabre.
