Cellulose Chess Set

Historically in the design of chess sets the pieces have been informed by architecture, with the most familar style, the Staunton, designed by an architect. In creating the Cellulose chess set I looked to a more natural architecture, plants and biology. Cellulose is the structural component which makes up the walls of plants. This idea was combined with the form of sprouts and a cellular construction to create the illusion of chess icons we are already familiar with, such as castles, horses and crowns. The intertwined stalks also bring to mind the complexity of chess due to the number of potential moves that could be made by each piece on the board.
