Illuminated Apparitions
Sculpting Space out of Light
Inside any movie theater, a visual phenomenon goes unnoticed. As the audience continues to fixate their attention on the screen, they ignore the ghostly three dimensional light beam emerging from the projector- an overlooked specter whose features are accentuated by dust particles in the room. Light has always been categorized as a form of energy traveling in seemingly instantaneous waves but rarely conceived as a spatial object. When these waves hit miniscule particles, they are perceived as having a solid value.
This project aims to redefine architecture by using an assembly of solid projected light rather than physical materials.

The outer skin of the residence is a blank white cube- identical in all elevations. A smaller glass cube is nested inside and contains the main living space created by light projections. In the space between the glass cube and the outer cube, a steel frame provides support to the skins and lighting assembly. The lighting assembly consists of dense high-powered LED lights that are linked to a programmable system. Hazers under the steel grate floor periodically emit fog in certain areas to accentuate the light.

The dense LED array can be programmed to articulate detailed architectural elements (such as columns, beams, walls and ceilings) or it can be programmed to form organic free flowing forms using algorithms and scripts. These forms can also be set to change over time- thus creating a constantly moving configuration. The architecture is redefined into a new assemblage of energy and data rather than fixed solid materials. The residents are free to walk through walls or inhabit the spaces inside the light.

Or the space can be turned off at the push of a button.
