Why have there been Great Women Designers?
From the start of my research, I knew that I wanted a more provoking approach to my project – to tap into topics that are rather “uncomfortable”. And I thought that to provoke is to ask questions. Then you’ll get a reaction or answer. I was inspired by the essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists (1971) by feminist scholar, Linda Nochlin. I found the writing to be poignant and illuminating on the discourse of women’s identity in visual practices such as art and design. Her essay though enlightening is also a little cynical due to the reality of the problematic structures that has caused the absence of women in art histories and prevented them to be at the same footing as men no matter the potency of their talent.
For the publication, I wanted to somehow respond and reflect upon Nochlin’s essay in relevance to how the discourse has transformed in today’s context. And more specifically, in Singapore’s context. The publication is titled Why have there been Great Women Designers? to question but also answer how there now exists great women designers (and some say artists) despite the patriarchal systems that still exists today. This will be the Singapore edition as I explore this in Singapore’s context. The art direction of the book carries the same spirit at the repository for Outcome 1 and the artefact for Outcome 2 – carefully chaotic & anti-design.
