Becoming Evil: Serial Killers Among Us
A documentary series about—you guessed it—serial killers!
This project had an interesting problem to solve. The title was part of a pre-existing line look that had already been established (see below for examples). The key art for all of the previous releases had heavily featured photographs of prominent serial killers, murderers, cult leaders, etc., but this specific collection was about unsolved cases—meaning, there weren't really photographed faces to feature. I decided instead to use the police sketches, mixed with various headlines about the cases, to help paint a picture of these faceless individuals.
Becoming Evil: Line Look
I decided to go with purple to add more color to an already colorful line (look! It's practically a rainbow now!). Purple also feels like a more mysterious and eerie color, and I thought it would lend itself well to the "unsolved" theme.
I would like to mention that while I created the art for the Becoming Evil: Serial Killers Among Us packaging and disc art, I did not create the line look or any of the previous releases.

One of my favorite details on the key art is the Golden State Killer peeking through the shape of the V in EVIL. Since all of the previous line art had text over the faces in the photographs, I wanted to do that, too, but I also wanted to make sure it felt like the illustration was watching you while hiding—thereby, making the police sketch a bit more life-like and visually emphasizing the theme of "Serial Killers Among Us".
One of my other favorite details was the serial killer police sketch collage on the back of the wrap. If you look closely, you might notice that multiple sketches are actually of the Golden State Killer. For a long time, the police thought it was 3 different people committing the crimes, and I thought it was such an interesting detail in the case that I wanted to recreate it in the packaging.
The VOD Digital Breakouts are featured above. When creating the artwork, I also had to think about how it was going to look and adjust to the many different horizontal and vertical versions we create for digital releases, both with and without text (depending on the needs of the end point). I love these types of challenges!
