ASHA is the organization responsible for certifying speech and language pathologists (SLPs). It develops and maintains the Standards for Certification in Speech-Language Pathology. To apply for ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), a person must first graduate from an academic program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

On top of graduating from an approved program, applicants must have completed Clinical Fellowship (CF) experience under an ASHA-certified mentor. The experience must last more than 36 weeks and 1,260 hours. In addition, they must take and pass the Praxis Examination in speech-language pathology. The exam tests their comprehension of important concepts and current practices in speech-language pathology.

Candidates who have met the above eligibility criteria can access a certification application document from the ASHA website and submit it with the required application fee and relevant accompanying documents. These include Praxis exam scores, official graduate transcripts, and a speech-language pathology clinical fellowship report. ASHA reviews all applications and awards qualifying applicants with the CCC-SLP.
