This is the encyclopedia illustration of the photo reference for the axolotl that is being used as a subject for the project. The illustration is made from charcoal and sketching pencils over sketching paper.
The gesture drawings were made from a various amount of mediums, from charcoal, black colored pencils, black crayons, black acrylic and watercolor paint, pencil, markers, sharpies, sepia ink, and India ink. The first half of the gestures were done for 2 minutes each, and the second half of the gestures were only done for 30 seconds each.
The logos were all done with sharpie over 3 x 3 squares of tracing paper. Some were done by implying shape through the use of stripping, and different kinds of hatching. While other ways to imply the shape of the axolotl was done by using smaller shapes, like with the triangles in one design and spirals with another design.
These were transformations that were also made from sharpie and 6 x 6 tracing paper. For the designs themselves, a few of them were inspired by characters from pop culture, and from classic archetypes found in pop culture. For example there are characters like, Wednesday Addams or the rap star, Drake. And the more general archetypes like the " distinguished gentleman" and the fairy princess.
The final version of the modified transformation of tree branches growing from the extended gills of the axolotl. In the final piece, the branches were grown out more and imitated leaves and branches in a more elaborate and clean design. The design was also made with more rough looking brush strokes to give the designs a more natural look to match with the trees.
